Foliophoma

Foliophoma Crous, in Crous & Groenewald, IMA Fungus 8(1): 142 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 820903; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08173, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic or pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata globose, eustromatic, uni to multi-locular with 1−3 ostioles, medium brown, outer surface smooth; wall of 3-6 layers of brown textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells lining inner cavity, hyaline, smooth, doliiform to subcylindrical; phialidic with periclinal thickening or percurrent proliferation at apex. Conidia aseptate, solitary, hyaline, smooth, guttulate to granular, broadly ellipsoidal, thick-walled, apex obtuse, base truncate to bluntly rounded (adapted from Crous & Groenewald 2017).

Type species: Foliophoma fallens (Sacc.) Crous

Notes: Foliophoma is characterised by globose, eustromatic, uni- to multi-locular conidiomata with 1−3 ostioles, doliiform to subcylindrical phialidic conidiophores, and aseptate, solitary, hyaline conidia. Foliophoma fallens was obtained from culture. Pem et al. in Hyde et al. (2020) introduced a second species, F. camporesii isolated from dead stems of Maclura pomifera (Moraceae) in Italy. Foliophoma is a distinct and well-defined genus in Coniothyriaceae. Molecular markers available for Foliophoma are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB and RPB2.
