Schrakia

Schrakia Hafellner, Nova Hedwigia, Beihefte zur 62: 204(1979).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4917; Facesoffungi number: FoF 00363, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on bark or lichen thalli in terrestrial habitats. Sexual morph: Ascomata apothecial, superficial, scattered on thallus on bark, sub-globose to globose, on exposure becoming velvety at maturity, dark concave and indistinct at the border, dark brown at the receptacle, carbonaceous, black. Exciple pseudoparenchymatous, dark brown at outer layer, distinct at the margin and centre, thick-walled, with cells of textura angularis at the inner layer, pale brown, continuous with brown cells of hypothecium. Hamathecium composed of 1.5–2 µm wide, filiform to filamentous, septate, branched, pseudoparaphyses, forming a brown epithecium above asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, broadly clavate, long pedicellate, with a thick apical chamber. Ascospores irregularly arranged, rounded at the upper part, cells wider at the upper part, narrowly rounded at lower part, uniseptate, constricted at the centre, smooth-walled, guttulate, dark brown. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Yacharoen et al. 2015).

Type species: Schrakia crassula (Starbäck) Hafellner

Notes: Schrakia is characterised by apothecial, superficial ascomata, broadly clavate, long-pedicellate asci and irregularly arrangeduniseptate ascospores. Eriksson and Hawksworth (1993), Hawksworth et al. (1995), Kutorga and Hawksworth (1997) accepted Schrakia as a distinct genus in Patellariaceae based on morphology. Hafellner (1979) did not agree and mentioned Schrakia differs from members of Patellariaceae in having apothecioid ascomata which later gymnocarpous and this is atypical of Patellariaceae. Kutorga and Hawksworth (1997) retained Schrakia in Patellariaceae. Yacharoen et al. (2015) examined the holotype specimen of S. crassula (S: F7154) and accepted Schrakia in Patellariaceae. Schrakia is currently a distinct genus in Patellariaceae but fresh collections and DNA sequence data are needed to confirm this taxonomic placement.
