Rimula Velen., Monographia Discomycetum Bohemiae: 38 (1934).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4756; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08130, 28 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Thallus thick, smooth and forming a thick cartilaginous film, brown, waxy where abraded. Apothecia irregular in outline, starting as a small rounded disc, gyrose with branching black lines, partly in sectors, black, convex. Excipulum black, very dense. Asci clavate, Rimularia type with IKI positive dome and ring in the tholus, separated by IKI-negative region. Paraphyses branched, with moniliform cells in KOH. Ascospores ellipsoid, simple, hyaline, wall relatively thick. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Rimularia gyromuscosa in Aptroot & Sparrius 2003).

 Type species: Rimula faginea Velen.

Notes: Rimula is characterised by thick, smooth thallus, black, very dense exciple, red-brown hypothecium, clavate asci and ellipsoid, simple, hyaline ascospores. Réblová and Svrček (1997) reported that Rimula is similar to Farlowiella. Jaklitsch et al. (2016) treated Rimula in Patellariaceae. Rimula is a distinct genus in Patellariaceae but lacks molecular data. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
