Hysteropeltella

Saprobic on stems of Aspidium filix-mas. Sexual morph: Ascomata elongate apothecial, whitish-grey, superficial, scattered, solitary, elongate ellipsoidal, apothecial or hypothecia-like, glabrous, coriaceous, with longitudinal slit-like opening. Peridium thin, composed of two layers of brown to dark brown pseudoparenchymatous cells, arranged in a textura angularis. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, broadly oblong to ellipsoidal, or clavate, sessile to subsessile, thick at the apex, apically rounded, with plane apex, asci apex tuning blue when stained by Melzer’s reagent. Ascospores overlapping irregular-seriate, initially hyaline, eventually becoming pale brown, clavate-oblong to fusoid, or ellipsoidal, with slightly rounded ends, 1- septate, slightly constricted at the septum, smooth-walled, surrounded by a thin, distinct mucilaginous sheath. Notes: Hysteropeltella is characterised by elongate apothecial ascomata, broadly oblong to ellipsoidal, or clavate asci, and clavate-oblong to fusoid, or ellipsoidaluniseptate ascospores. Holm and Holm (1978) revised Hysteropeltella and reported that the asci of H. moravica turn blue at the apex when stained in Melzer’s reagent (Ariyawansa et al. 2013). Holm and Holm (1978) treated Hysteropeltella in discomycetes based on the hysterothecial morphology and presence of a longitudinal slit. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) placed Hysteropeltella in Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis. Ariyawansa et al. (2013) studied the type specimen of Hysteropeltella moravica and reported that the ascospores are hyaline becoming light brown at maturity and blue when stained in Melzer’s reagent. Hysteropeltella is similar to Linopeltis in having hysterothecial ascomata with a longitudinal slit-like opening (Ariyawansa et al. 2013). Ariyawansa et al. (2013) placed Hysteropeltella in Schizothyriaceae based on morphology and this was followed by Wijayawardene et al. (2014). Yacharoen et al. (2015) did not agree with this placement and treated Hysteropeltella in Schizothyriaceae based on the features of ascomata which form elongated apothecial or hypothecia-like ascomata and referred the genus to Patellariaceae. Hysteropeltella is currently a distinct genus in Patellariaceae but molecular data is required to confirm this taxonomic placement.
