Syrropeltis

Syrropeltis Bat., J.L. Bezerra & Matta, in Batista & Bezerra, Portug. acta biol., Sér. B 7(4): 376 (1964).

Index Fungorum number: IF 5344; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08122, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Epiphytes on surface of leaves appearing as large black spots. Superficial mycelium absent. Sexual morph: Ascostromata superficial on surface of host, solitary, circular, flattened, swollen and cracked around the center, black. Locules central ostiole, walled cells arranged radially when viewed in squash mounts. Hamathecium hyaline, aseptate, embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Peridium very thin, comprising dark brown to black cells of textura angularis. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, cylindrical to obovoid, with an ocular chamber, short and round pedicel. Ascospores 2- seriate, uniseptate, oval to ellipsoid, upper cell broader than lower cell, slightly constricted and darker at the septum, smooth-walled, hyaline when immature, pale brown at maturity. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Doilom et al. 2018).

Type species: Syrropeltis xylopiae Bat., J.L. Bezerra & Matta

Notes: Syrropeltis is characterised by superficial, solitary, circular, flattened ascostromata, hyaline, aseptate hamathecium anduniseptate, oval to ellipsoid ascospores. Wijayawardene et al. (2014, 2018) listed Syrropeltis in Dothideomycetes, genera incertae sedis. Doilom et al. (2018) re-examined the holotype specimen of S. xylopiae (URM 39757) and treated Syrropeltis in Parmulariaceae based on the large, black ascostromata, uniseptate ascospores which are ovoid, with upper cell broader and longer, slightly constricted and pale brown to brown at the septum. Syrropeltis is currently a distinct genus in Parmulariaceae but lacks sequence data. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus. Syrropeltis needs epitypification.
