Parasitic on living leaves. Sexual morph: Internal stromata present. Ascostromata solitary to gregarious, superficial, circular, elliptical to irregular, black, carbonaceous, flattened, with ridges irregularly radiating from the centre to the outer rim; ridges containing elongated locules, which open by a longitudinal slit and contain numerous asci. Locules immersed in ascomata. Upper wall of ascostromata comprises several black layers. Hamathecium of hyaline, septate, filamentous, pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, thick-walled, bitunicate, broadly cylindrical to clavate, subglobose, with an ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3-seriate, or irregularly arranged in asci, ellipsoidal, dark brown. Type species: Rhipidocarpon javanicum (Pat.) Theiss. & Syd.
Notes: Rhipidocarpon is characterised by solitary to gregarious, superficial, circular ascostromata, broadly cylindrical to clavate, subglobose asci and 2–3-seriate, or irregularly arranged, ellipsoidal, dark brown ascospores. Rhipidocarpon resembles Parmularia in having a black ascostromata with ridges radiating from the centre to the outer rim. Rhipidocarpon has a circular, elliptical to irregular ascostromata with ridges unevenly radiating from centre, while Parmularia has shield-like, rounded ascostromata regularly radiating from centre. Rhipidocarpon also has subglobose to clavate asci and verrucose ascospores while Parmularia has broadly cylindrical and smooth-walled asci. The holotype specimen of R. javanicum is lost. DNA sequence data is lacking, hence fresh collections and molecular data is needed to confirm the correct taxonomic placement of Rhipidocarpon.
