Protothyrium

Protothyrium G. Arnaud, C. r. hebd. Séanc. Acad. Sci., Paris 164: 574 (1917).

Index Fungorum number: IF 4395; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02331, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Pathogenic on living leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata irregular, prominent, black, rugose, arranged on one side and there in circles, with slender white coffins. Asci clavate, 8-spored. Ascospores elliptical, uniseptate, rounded on both sides, hyaline. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from description of Phyllachora salvadore in Cooke 1885).

Type species: Protothyrium salvadorae (Cooke) G. Arnaud

Notes: Protothyrium is characterised by irregular, prominent, black, rugose ascomata, clavate, 8-spored asci and elliptical, uniseptate ascospores rounded at both sides. Inácio and Cannon (2008) accepted four species. Protothyrium is a distinct genus in Parmulariaceae. Molecular data is lacking. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus. The type species P. salvadorae needs to be re-collected and Protothyrium must be epitypified.
