Pachypatella

Pachypatella Theiss. & Syd., Annls mycol. 13(3/4): 228 (1915).

Pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary or aggregated, opening by a rupture, irregular, rounded to oblong or lobed, black, thick, at first globose, later a plain margin unveiling. Stromata gregarious, irregularly rounded, superficial, brown to dark-brown, formed directly under the epidermis, flat-based, initially covered by the epidermis, shedding the epidermis. Perithecia carbonaceous. Ascus 8-spored, sparingly paraphysate. Ascospores one to two biseriate, short and broad, club-like, brown, upper cell twice as large as the lower cell. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Theissen & Sydow 1915).

Type species: Pachypatella alsophilae (Racib.) Theiss. & Syd.

Notes: Pachypatella is characterised by superficial, solitary or aggregated ascomata, spored, sparingly paraphysate asci and one to two biseriate, club-like, brown ascospores. Molecular data is lacking for Pachypatella. Pachypatella is currently a distinct genus in Parmulariaceae. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
