Index Fungorum number: IF 456; Facesoffungi number: FoF 02301, 4 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Parasitic on host. Sexual morph: Internal stromata immersed under the host. Ascostromata solitary, scattered or gregarious, superficial, circular or elliptical or irregular shape, flat, black, opening via irregular fissures, internal part of ascostromata thick comprising multi locules, with a thin dark brown tissue under the loculate layer, comprising textura angularis. Upper wall of ascostromata comprising 25–35 μm thick, dark brown layer of cells of textura angularis. Wall between locules, comprising light brown to hyaline cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium 1.5–2.5 μm wide, composed of hyaline, septate, filament cellular pseudoparaphyses above the asci. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, subglobose, obovoid, with rounded apex, apedicellate, thick-walled, smooth, with a large apical chamber.  Type species: Aulacostroma palawanense Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Aulacostroma is characterised by scattered or gregarious, superficial, circular or elliptical ascostromata, subglobose, obovoid asci and ellipsoidal, uniseptate ascospores constricted at the septum. Molecular data is lacking for Aulacostroma. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Aulacostroma. Aulacostroma needs epitypification.
