Nothophaeotheca

Nothophaeotheca Crous, in Crous et al., Persoonia 46: 385 (2021).

Index Fungorum number: IF 839526; Facesoffungi number: FoF xx, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium consisting of smooth, hyaline to green-brown, septate, branched hyphae that give rise to microsclerotia, green-brown, globose to ellipsoid, containing endoconidia, globose, ellipsoid, green-brown, verruculose, muriformly septate, initially in clusters of 2–6, eventually disarticulating into solitary, globose-ellipsoid conidia, thick-walled, verruculose to warty, 0–1-septate, ellipsoid-globose, (7–)8–9 × (6–)7–8 µm.

Type species: Nothophaeotheca mirabibensis Crous

Notes: Nothophaeotheca is characterized by a dematiaceous hyphomycetous morph viz. hyaline to green-brown, septate mycelium, globose verruculose endoconidia disarticulating into globose-ellipsoid conidia. Nothophaeotheca resembles Neophaeotheca but is a phylogenetically distinct genus in Neophaeothecaceae.
