Neophaeotheca

Neophaeotheca Abdollahz. & Crous, in Abdollahzadeh et al., Stud. Mycol. 95: 392 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 833145; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11420, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Pathogenic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium consisting of hyaline, smooth, septate, branched hyphae, that swell in terminal or intercalary cells, developing numerous endoconidia. Endoconidia brown, verruculose, globose to obovoid, muriformly septate, bursting open to release endoconidia that are red-brown, verruculose, aseptate, ellipsoid to subglobose or irregular (adapted from Abdollahzadeh et al. 2020).

Type species: Neophaeotheca salicorniae (Crous & Roets) Abdollahz. & Crous

Notes: Neophaeotheca is characterised by hyaline, smooth, septate mycelium, brown, verruculose and brown, globose to obovoid endoconidia. Neophaeotheca morphologically resembles Phaeotheca but is phylogenetically distinct. Molecular markers available for Neophaeotheca include ITS, LSU, TEF-1 and RPB2 for both species N. salicorniae and N. triangularis.
