Neodactylaria
Neodactylaria Guevara-Suarez, Deanna A. Sutton, Wiederh. & Gené, in Crous et al., Persoonia 38: 345 (2017).
Index Fungorum number: IF 820857; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11972, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Mycelium superficial or immersed, composed of branched, septate, smooth-walled, hyaline to subhyaline hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores macronematous, mononematous, straight or flexuous, septate, unbranched, smooth-walled, pale to mid brown. Conidiogenous cells polyblastic, sympodial extended, integrated, terminal or intercalary, denticulate, with short cylindrical denticles, pale to medium-brown. Conidial secession schizolytic. Conidia obpyriform to obclavate, unicellular or septate, attenuate, subulate or rostrate toward the obtuse apex, with a tiny, protuberant basal hilum, smooth or finely echinulate, subhyaline or pale brown (adapted from Crous et al. 2017).
Type species: Neodactylaria obpyriformis Guevara-Suarez, Deanna A. Sutton, Wiederhold & Gené
Notes: Neodactylaria is characterised by macronematous, mononematous conidiophores, polyblastic, sympodial extended conidiogenous cells, schizolytic conidial secession and obpyriform to obclavate, unicellular or septate conidia. Neodactylaria morphologically resembles Dactylaria but differs in the size and number of conidial septa. Dactylaria is heterogeneous and belongs to Helotiales (Leotiomycetes) while other Dactylaria species are in Sordariomycetes (Crous et al. 2017). In the phylogenetic analysis of Crous et al. (2017) based on ITS, SSU, LSU, RPB2 and TEF-1 gene sequences, N. obpyriformis formed a distinct clade within Dothideomycetes with high statistical support and is phylogenetically distinct from Dactylaria. Neodactylaria is a distinct and type genus of Neodactylariaceae. Molecular markers available for Neodactylaria are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF-1.
