Dictyonella

Dictyonella Höhn. [as 'Dyctionella'], Sber. Akad. Wiss. Wien, Math. -naturw. Kl., Abt. 1 118: 369 (1909).

Index Fungorum number: IF 1531; Facesoffungi number: FoF 12939, 83 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 6 species with molecular data.

Epiphytic or saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Ascostromata superficial, brown to black, rough, scattered, solitary on lower surface of leaf, hemispherical, pulvinate, surrounded by brown mycelial network forming plectenchymatous tissue, subiculum, multi-loculate each with single ascus and without obvious separating wall layer. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, globose to subglobose, short pedicellate, apically rounded, with indistinct ocular chamber. Ascospores crowded, muriform, ellipsoid to oblong, hyaline when immature, becoming brown at maturity, obtuse at both ends, slightly constricted at middle septum, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Doilom et al. 2018).

Type species: Dictyonella erysiphoides (Rehm) Höhn.

Notes: Dictyonella is characterised by superficial, brown to black, rough, scattered ascostromata, globose to subglobose asci and ellipsoid to oblong, brown ascospores. Doilom et al. (2018) re-examined the holotype specimen of D. erysiphoides (S-F12211) and transferred Dictyonella from Saccardiaceae to Myriangiales, genus incertae sedis based on morphology especially pulvinate ascostromata, irregularly asci arranged in one or more layers in locules with minute pedicels and indistinct ocular chambers. The taxonomic placement of Dictyonella is doubtful due to lack of sequence data and is currently placed in Myriangiales genus incertae sedis (Hongsanan et al. 2020a). The representative species, mainly the type species, need to be recollected to clarify the natural placement of Dictyonella. Molecular markers available for Dictyonella are ITS, LSU and SSU.
