Ascostratum

Ascostratum Syd. & P. Syd., Annls mycol. 10(1): 41 (1912).

Index Fungorum number: IF 380; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06539, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on bark in terrestrial habitats. Sexual morph: Ascostromata superficial, scattered, solitary or aggregated, carbonaceous, semi-immersed to erumpent, black, globose to sub-globose, ruptured epidermis, multi-loculate, locules scattered in the middle region of the ascostromata, ostiolate. Ostioles minute, ascospores release via breakdown of the cells of ascostromata. Hamathecium lacking paraphyses. Cells of the ascostromata comprising flattened textura intricata. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, oval to globose, short pedicellate or apedicellate, apically rounded with indistinct ocular chamber. Ascospores hyaline, ellipsoid to fusiform, obtuse at both ends, 7–9-transverse septa, longitudinal septa absent, smooth-walled, lacking a sheath. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Dissanayake et al. 2014).

Type species: Ascostratum insigne Syd. & P. Syd.

Notes: Ascostratum is characterised by ascostromata with several locules distributed in the middle region of the ascostromata, semi-immersed or erumpent, asci oval to globose, and ascospores hyaline with 7–9 transverse septa. Ascostratum resembles Anhellia by releasing ascospores through breakdown of the cells of ascostromata. Fresh collections and DNA sequence data are needed to establish the natural classification of Ascostratum. Currently, Ascostratum is taxonomically placed in Myriangiaceae.
