Virgasporium

Virgasporium Cooke, Grevillea 3(no. 28): 182 (1875).

Index Fungorum number: IF 10410; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08671, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), No molecular data available.

Epiphyllous. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores fasciculate short, scattered over sub-orbicular or irregular tawny spots, simple or slightly branched, septate. Conidia terminal, linear, slightly thickened toward the base, multiseptate, hyaline (adapted from Cooke 1875).

Type species: Virgasporium maculatum Cooke

Notes: Virgasporium is characterised by fasciculate conidiophores and multiseptate, hyaline conidia. Cooke (1875) suggested the placement of Virgasporium in Helminthosporium. Braun et al. (2013) considered Virgasporium as a synonym of Cercospora based on morphology. The holotype specimen of Virgasporium is lost. The placement of Virgasporium in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Virgasporium.
