Associated with sooty moulds. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies adaxially on living leaves, circular, black, sooty blotches, growing intermixed with D. coussapoae. External mycelium superficial on leaves, subreticulate, constricted at hyphal septa, forming a superficial web, pale brown to brown, smooth. Conidiophores absent. Conidiogenous cells consisting of short and poorly differentiated 1-celled mycelial branches. Conidiogenous loci indistinct. Conidia solitary, anthropomorphic staurospores (resembling acrobats in action, particularly when viewed laterally) with a stalk cell (head) and subcylindrical arms, tapering to an obtuse tip, 2–6-septate, eguttulate, brown, smooth (adapted from Spegazzini 1918 and Rocha et al. 2010).

Notes: Tripospermum is characterised by superficial external mycelium, short and poorly differentiated conidiogenous loci, and solitary, anthropomorphic staurospores conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Quaedvlieg et al. (2014), Tripospermum clustered within Neodevriesiaceae but in the analysis of Hongsanan et al. (2020), Tripospermum formed a lineage outside Neodevriesiaceae. Chomnunti et al. (2012) reported that Trichomerium which comprises sooty mould taxa and belongs to Eurotiomycetes might have Tripospermum asexual morph. Crous et al. (2014) provided sequence data for Trichomerium dioscoreae. Hongsanan et al. (2016) reported a tripospermum-like asexual species together with the sooty mould taxon Trichomerium gloeosporum and reported it as the asexual morph of Trichomerium gloeosporum based on ITS sequence data. Maharachchikumbura et al. (2018) introduced Trichomerium chiangmaiensis on living leaves of Coffea arabica (Rubiaceae) in Thailand based on morphology and phylogeny. Hongsanan et al. (2020a) reported that Tripospermum species cluster in two different classes, Eurotiomycetes and Dothideomycetes and hence treated Tripospermum in Neodevriesiaceae as Trichomerium s. lato. DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the status of Tripospermum and to verify its taxonomic placement. Epitypification of Tripospermum is required. Molecular markers available for Tripospermum are LSU, SSU and RPB2.
