Tapeinosporium

Tapeinosporium Bonord., Bot. Ztg. 11: 285 (1853).

Index Fungorum number: IF 10176; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08668, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidial chains multiseptate, arising from aseptate, simple or sometimes branched “stalks” [conidiophores]. Conidia ovate, 3-septate, greenish, caespitose conidial chains olivaceous or later black (adapted from Bonorden 1853 and Videira et al. 2017).

 Type species: Tapeinosporium viride Bonord.

Notes: Tapeinosporium is characterised by multiseptate conidial chains arising from conidiophores, and ovate, 3-septate, greenish conidia. Saccardo (1886) regarded Tapeinosporium as a synonym of Septocylindrium. Braun (1998) and Videira et al. (2016) considered the latter as a synonym of Ramularia. The holotype specimen of T. viride is lost and the original description provided by Bornorden (1853) has been used as the lectotype. Videira et al. (2017) mentioned that the illustration is unlike genuine Ramularia species and resembles those of Cladosporium or similar saprobic hyphomycetous genera. The placement of Tapeinosporium in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed for the epitypification of Tapeinosporium viride and to clarify its phylogenetic placement.
