Stenospora

Stenospora Deighton, Mycol. Pap. 118: 22 (1969).

Index Fungorum number: IF 10086; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08663, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Hyperparasitic on rust fungus. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium hyperparasitic, hyphae colourless, septate. Conidiophores arising as lateral branches of the mycelial hyphae, short, smooth, simple or branched, septate, with conidial scars very slightly but distinctly thickened and refractive and slightly prominent. Conidia colorless, acicular, much resembling those of Cercospora, smooth, pluriseptate, with a very slightly but distinctly thickened and refractive truncate hilum (adapted from Deighton 1969 and Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Stenospora uredinicola Deighton

Notes: Stenospora is characterised by hyperparasitic mycelium, smooth, simple or branched conidiophores and colourless, acicular conidia. Stenospora resembles Cercospora in having similar conidial morphology. Stenospora is also very similar to Eriocercospora but differs in having mucedinaceous hyaline conidia. The placement of Stenospora in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the generic placement of Stenospora.
