Importance and distribution

Sphaerellothecium pumilum has been transferred to Stigmidium. Sphaerellothecium comprises 37 species known on a wide range of lichens such as Arctoparmelia incurva, on exposed granite rock (Parmeliaceae), Buellia muscicola (Caliciaceae), Cladonia parasitica (Cladoniaceae), in sand dunes on Cetraria aculeata (Parmeliaceae), Lecanora epibryon (Lecanoraceae), Lecidea atrobrunnea (Lecideaceae), Ochrolechia tartarea (Ochrolechiaceae), Placidium lacinulatum (Verrucariaceae), Sporastatia testudinea (Sporastatiaceae) and thallus of Urceolaria scruposa var. bryophila (Graphidaceae). Sphaerellothecium is reported from several countries including Antarctica, Europe (Austria, France, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine) and the United States (California). Sphaerellothecium has high diversity, but all species lack sequence data.
