Sonderhenia

Sonderhenia H.J. Swart & J. Walker, in Swart & Walker, Trans. Brit. Mycol. Soc. 90: 640 (1988)

Index Fungorum number: IF 11192; Facesoffungi number: FoF 01702, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), 3 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on leaves. Sexual morph: Mycosphaerella swartii. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, in necrotic leaf spots, small, substomata. Conidiomatal wall composed of 1-3 layers of dark isometric cells. Ostiole comprising hyaline hyphae extending above the stoma. Conidiogenous cells per current, brown, arising from the inner wall of the locule. Conidia holoblastic oval to cylindrical, dark brown, verruculose, distoseptate, apex rounded, base truncate (adapted from Swart and Walker 1988).

Type species: Sonderhenia eucalyptorum (Hansf.) H.J. Swart & J. Walker

Notes: Sonderhenia comprises species with Mycosphaerella-like sexual morphs and pycnidial asexual morphs. Sonderhenia is characterised by brown conidiogenous cells that proliferate per currently and produce brown conidia that are transversely distoseptate. Phylogenetically, Sonderhenia is a distinct and well-supported genus in Mycosphaerellaceae. Molecular markers available for Sonderhenia include ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB, Calmodulin, RPB2 and TEF-1.
