Quasiphloeospora

Foliicolous, associated with lesions. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium internal, brown, branched, septate. Conidiomata separate, acervular to sporodochial, epidermal to subepidermal, composed of brown textura angularis at the base, and textura prismatica above. Conidiophores brown, verruculose, irregularly branched at the base, septate, cylindrical, formed from the upper cells of the conidiomata. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal or lateral, smooth or verruculose, brown, cylindrical, straight, proliferating percurrently and enteroblastically to form annellations or sympodially and holoblastically. Conidiogenous loci dark and thickened. Conidia holoblastic, pale brown, smooth, cylindrical, septate, obtuse at the apex and truncate at the base; basal scar dark and thickened (adapted from Sutton et al. 1996 and Videira et al. 2017).

Notes: Quasiphloeospora is characterised by internal, brown, branched mycelium, separate, acervular to sporodochial conidiomata, brown, verruculose conidiophores, integrated, terminal or lateral conidiogenous cells with dark and thickened conidiogenous loci and holoblastic, pale brown, smooth, cylindrical, septate conidia. Sutton et al. (1996) referred to the conidiomata of Quasiphloeospora as acervuli while Videira et al. (2017) mentioned it as sporodochia. Quasiphloeospora is morphologically similar to other genera in Mycosphaerellaceae such as Cercospora, Passalora and Pseudocercospora and it is difficult to clearly differentiate among those genera based on morphology alone. Quasiphloeospora resembles Pseudocercosporella in having pale, almost hyaline structures. Videira et al. (2017) mentioned that it might be possible that Quasiphloeospora is not related to any of the cercosporoid genera. Quasiphloeospora also resembles Pseudocercosporella in having pale, almost hyaline structures. The placement of Quasiphloeospora in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to determine the generic position and affinity with other genera in Mycosphaerellaceae.
