Pseudostigmidium

Pseudostigmidium Etayo, in Etayo & Rosato, Biblthca Lichenol. 98: 193 (2008).

Index Fungorum number: IF 532868; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08647, 5 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Lichenicolous. Sexual morph: Ascomata perithecioid, black, subconical or subglobose, immersed to semi-immersed, protruding, periphyses abundant, paraphyses lacking, gelatinuous hymenial mass I+, KI+ red to violaceous. Asci bitunicate, fissitunicate, clavate, broad obovoid to saccate, apically thickened, with an ocular chamber, wall I+, KI+ red to violaceous, 8-spored. Ascospores ellipsoid, ellipsoid-ovoid, fusiform, (0–)1–3-septate, colorless, sometimes becoming somewhat pigmented with age. Asexual morph: unknown (adapted from Etayo & Sancho, 2008; Videira et al., 2017).

Type species: Pseudostigmidium nephromiarium (Linds.) Etayo

Notes: Pseudostigmidium is characterised by perithecioid, black, subconical or subglobose ascomata, clavate, broad obovoid to saccate asci and ellipsoid, ellipsoid-ovoid, fusiform, (0–)1–3-septate ascospores. Pseudostigmidium comprises lichenicolous species characterised by the sexual morph. Hyde et al. (2013) treated Pseudostigmidium in Mycosphaerellaceae, but this was not confirmed based on molecular data. The placement of Pseudostigmidium in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of Pseudostigmidium.
