Pleuropassalora
Pleuropassalora U. Braun, C. Nakash., Videira & Crous, in Videira et al., Stud. Mycol. 87: 307 (2017).
Index Fungorum number: IF 822610; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08546, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Associated with leaf spot. Mycelium internal, smooth, branched, pale brown. Caespituli hypophyllous, fasciculate to synnematous, arising from a pale brown stroma. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores subcylindrical, unbranched, flexuous, guttulate, pale to medium brown, smooth, septate. Conidiogenous cells terminal, subcylindrical, guttulate, pale to medium brown, finely verruculose, becoming slightly swollen, appearing clavate, with multiple conidiogenous loci, round, darkened, thickened, refractive, prominent, proliferation sympodial. Conidia solitary, pale to medium brown, smooth to finely verruculose, granular to guttulate, thin-walled, ellipsoidal to obovoid, obpyriform, wider basal cell and apical cell elongating into a beak, transversely multiseptate, hilum thickened, darkened and refractive (adapted from Videira et al. 2017).
Type species: Pleuropassalora armatae (Crous & A.R. Wood) U. Braun, C. Nakash., Videira & Crous
Notes: Pleuropassalora is characterised by hypophyllous, fasciculate to synnematous caespituli, subcylindrical, unbranched, flexuous conidiophores, subcylindrical, guttulate conidiogenous cells, and solitary, pale to medium brown conidia. Pleuropassalora accommodates a species that is not congeneric with Passalora, which is based on the type Passalora bacilligera. Pleuropassalora differs from Passalora in having conidia that remain attached to conidiogenous cells in culture, giving the characteristic look of small tufts of conidiophores which is lacking in Passalora s. str. Pleuropassalora is a distinct and well-supported lineage in Mycosphaerellaceae. Molecular markers available for Pleuropassalora include LSU, ITS and RPB2.
