Pleopassalora

Pleopassalora Videira & Crous, in Videira et al., Stud. Mycol. 87: 348 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 822608; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08545, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Pleoasexual morphic, pathogenic, causing leaf spots. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium internal, hyphae smooth, branched, septate, brown. Stromata medium brown, erumpent, protuberant and pulvinate, composed of textura angularis. Conidiomata amphigenous, eustromatic, bearing Type 1 conidiophores and conidia, Type 2 conidiophores and conidia, or both. Type 1 synasexual morph: Conidiophores occasionally solitary, usually in fascicles arising from stromata, pale to medium brown, smooth to rugose, subcylindrical, branched or unbranched, walls slightly thickened, straight to variously curved or geniculate-sinuous, septate. Conidiogenous cells terminal, verruculose or rugose, unbranched, subcylindrical, tapering to rounded apices proliferating sympodially, conidiogenous loci slightly thickened and darkened, refractive, flat or sometimes protuberant. Conidia solitary, pale olivaceous, dry, smooth, rarely finely verruculose, straight or curved, narrowly obclavate to subcylindrical, tapering gradually to an obtuse apex and to a rounded base, often constricted at one or more septa, hila slightly but distinctly thickened, darkened and refractive. Type 2 synasexual morph: Conidiophores reduced, hyaline to sub-hyaline, aseptate or uniseptate, lining a stroma. Conidia hyaline to pale olivaceous, cylindrical, rounded at the apex, truncate at the base, smooth, aseptate to 3-septate, occasionally constricted at septa, hila broad, truncate to slightly convex, not darkened, unthickened, non-refractive. Type 3 synasexual morph: Type 2 conidia develop thick-walled hyphal swellings (reminiscent of chlamydospores), ellipsoid and hyaline, aseptate touniseptate, that burst free from the cells of the Type 2 conidia, frequently carrying remnants of the conidial wall attached to their hyaline walls (adapted from Beilharz et al. 2004; Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Pleopassalora perplexa (Beilharz, Pascoe, M.J. Wingf. & Crous) Videira & Crous

Notes: Pleopassalora is a pleoasexual morphic cercosporoid fungi which has been described with three morphs. The first was characterised as hyphomyceteous, a second morph described as a coelomyceteous, and a third morph demonstrating a resting spore form on natural substrates and artificial media (Beilharz et al. 2004). Phylogenetically, Pleopassalora is a distinct and well-supported genus in Mycosphaerellaceae. Molecular markers available for Pleopassalora are LSU, SSU, ITS, Actin and RPB2.
