Passalora
Passalora Fr., Summa veg. Scand., Sectio Post. (Stockholm): 500 (1849).
Index Fungorum number: IF 9233; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08539, 557 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 17 species with molecular data.
Hyphomycetous, associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium internal, consisting of hyaline, branched, septate hyphae. Stromata absent or small. Conidiophores emerging through stomata, in fascicles, unbranched or branched, straight to flexuous, at times with a single basal septum, usually up to 3-septate, medium brown, somewhat swollen in the conidiogenous region. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal, with flat, somewhat thickened and darkened loci. Conidia solitary, olivaceous to pale brown, thin-walled, smooth, straight or gently curved, mostly didymosporous, constricted at septum, with somewhat thickened, darkened and refractive hila (adapted from Videira et al. 2017).
Type species: Passalora bacilligera (Mont. & Fr.) Fresen.
Notes: Passalora is characterised by solitary, fasciculate to synnematous conidiophores and conidia formed singly or in chains with conspicuous (thickened and darkened) conidiogenous loci (scars) and nonscolecosporous, pigmented conidia. Passalora s. lat. is currently para- or polyphyletic (Thomma et al. 2005; Crous et al. 2009, 2013). It has been reported that the passalora-like clades in Mycosphaerellaceae are not clearly related with morphological groups within Passalora (Videira et al. 2017). Previous synonyms such as Fulvia, Mycovellosiella and Phaeoramularia were resurrected by Videira et al. (2017) and are no longer considered synonyms of Passalora s. str. Numerous passalora-like species that lack DNA sequence data are currently placed in Passalora s. lat. which makes the taxonomy of Passalora complex and in need of revision. Molecular markers available for Passalora are ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB, Histone, RPB2 and TEF-1.
