Pallidocercospora Crous, in Crous et al., Stud. Mycol. 75: 73 (2012) [2013]

Index Fungorum number: IF 564820; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08532, 8 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 8 species with molecular data.

Foliicolous, pathogenic, causing discrete leaf spots. Sexual morph: Ascomata single, black, immersed, globose, glabrous comprising wall of 3–4 layers of medium brown textura angularis. Asci fasciculate, bitunicate, aparaphysate, subsessile, 8-spored, ellipsoid to obclavate or cylindrical, straight or curved, numerous. Ascospores 2–multi-seriate, oblique, overlapping, straight ellipsoidal to obovoid, colourless, smooth, uniseptate. Mycelium predominantly immersed, consisting of olivaceous-brown hyphae, smooth, branched, septate. Conidiophores in vivo fasciculate, or occurring singly on superficial mycelium as lateral projections, unbranched or branched, septate, cylindrical, straight to geniculate–sinuous, olivaceous-brown. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal, cylindrical, straight to geniculate-sinuous, olivaceous-brown, proliferating sympodially or percurrently; conidiogenous loci unthickened, not darker than the surrounding conidiogenous cell. Conidia solitary, straight to irregularly curved, guttulate, pale olivaceous to olivaceous-brown, subcylindrical to narrowly obclavate, multiseptate; hila neither thickened nor darkened. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Crous et al. 2013).

Type species: Pallidocercospora heimii (Crous) Crous

Notes: Pallidocercospora differs from Pseudocercospora in having pale olivaceous, smooth conidia, usually termed as the Mycosphaerella heimii complex (Crous et al. 2004). Pallidocercospora can be distinguished from similar genera based on DNA sequence data. Molecular markers available for Pallidocercospora include ITS, LSU, SSU, Actin, BTUB, Calmodulin, Histone, TEF-1 and RPB2.
