Ovosphaerella

Ovosphaerella Laib., Centbl. Bakt. ParasitKde, Abt. II 55: 293 (1922).

Index Fungorum number: IF 3659; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08635, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual and asexual morph: see Laibach (1922)

Type species: Ovosphaerella lapathi Laib.

Notes: Ovosphaerella accommodated a mycosphaerella-like sexual stage of Ovularia obliqua. The current name of Ovularia obliqua is Ramularia rubella (Braun, 1998). The holotype specimen of O. lapathi is lost (Aptroot, 2006; Videira et al., 2017). Videira et al. (2017) mentioned that if the relationship between the sexual and asexual morphs on Rumex (Polygonaceae) were accurate, Ovosphaerella would be a synonym of Ramularia but this has not been confirmed with molecular data. Molecular data is lacking for Ovosphaerella. The placement of Ovosphaerella in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic position of the Ovosphaerella.
