Nothophaeocryptopus

Nothophaeocryptopus Videira, C. Nakash. & Crous, in Videira et al., Stud. Mycol. 87: 309 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 822698; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08529, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Mycelium internal and superficial, pseudothecia, internal and superficial, emerging through stomata on the lower surface of leaves, black. Ascospores hyaline, ellipsoidal with obtuse ends, uniseptate, slightly constricted at the septa, the basal cell slightly narrower and tapering toward its base. Germinating ascospores develop germ hyphae from polar ends of both cells. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Nothophaeocryptopus gaeumannii (T. Rohde) Videira, C. Nakash., U. Braun & Crous

Notes: Nothophaeocryptopus is characterised by superficial pseudothecia, and hyaline, uniseptate, ellipsoidal ascospores with obtuse ends. Nothophaeocryptopus accommodates a species of Phaeocryptopus that is not congeneric with the type of Phaeocryptopus, P. nudus. No asexual morph has been observed. Nothophaeocryptopus is a well-supported lineage in Mycosphaerellaceae. Molecular markers available for Nothophaeocryptopus include ITS, LSU, BTUB, and RPB2.
