Lembosiopsis

Lembosiopsis Theiss., in Theissen & Sydow, Annls mycol. 15(6): 422 (1918) [1917].

Index Fungorum number: IF 2731; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08623, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Ascomata solitary to clustered, subcuticular, circular, slightly irregular from above, black, shiny, with a central rounded ostiole. Hamathecium lacking pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, obclavate, tapering towards the apex, apedicellate or with short pedicel, apically rounded with a small ocular chamber. Ascospores 2–3- seriate in the ascus, narrowly ovoid, tapering from the apex to the base, uniseptate slightly above the centre, slightly constricted at the septum, hyaline, surrounded by thin gelatinous sheath, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al., 2014; Videira et al., 2017).

Type species: Lembosiopsis andromedae (Tracy & Earle) Theiss.

Notes: Lembosiopsis is characterised by solitary to clustered, subcuticular, circular ascomata, bitunicate, obclavate asci and narrowly ovoid, uniseptate ascospores surrounded by a thin gelatinous sheath. Lumbsch and Huhndorf (2010) listed Lembosiopsis in Asterinaceae. Hongsanan et al. (2014) re-examined the holotype of L. andromedae (BPI 647155) and transferred Lembosiopsis to Mycosphaerellaceae based on the subcuticular ascomata with a rounded central ostiole, lacking pseudoparaphyses, and obclavate asci. The placement of Lembosiopsis in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collections with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
