Janetia

Janetia M.B. Ellis, More Dematiaceous Hyphomycetes (Kew): 33 (1976).

Index Fungorum number: IF 8650; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08507, 14 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Colonies effuse, thin, dark blackish brown. Mycelium superficial composed of a network of branched and anastomosing septate, olivaceous or dark brown, smooth hyphae. Stroma none; setae and hyphopodia absent. Conidiophores micronematous, mononematous. Conidiogenous cells integrated, mostly intercalary, polyblastic, denticulate; denticles large, flat-topped. Conidia solitary, dry, obclavate, multiseptate, brown, smooth (adapted from Ellis 1976; Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Janetia euphorbiae M.B. Ellis

Notes: Janetia is characterised by effuse, thin, dark blackish brown colonies, micronematous, mononematous conidiophores, integrated, mostly intercalary, polyblastic conidiogenous cells and solitary, dry, obclavate, multiseptate, brown, smooth conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Videira et al. (2017), LSU sequences of two species J. wilsonii and J. dimorphandrae-mollis cluster in Mycosphaerellaceae close to Zasmidium complex. Videira et al. (2017) accepted Janetia in Mycosphaerellaceae tentatively until sequence data from more taxa are obtained. Janetia is a distinct genus in Mycosphaerellaceae but sequence data from more taxa are needed to confirm this taxonomic placement. Molecular markers available for Janetia are ITS and LSU.
