Hippopotamyces

Hippopotamyces Crous, in Crous et al., Persoonia 43: 281 (2019).

Index Fungorum number: IF 832879; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11154, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, globose, brown, opening via irregular rupture; wall of 6–8 layers of brown textura angularis. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells lining the inner cavity, hyaline, smooth, but green olivaceous in mass, ampulliform to doliiform, phialidic. Conidia solitary, hyaline, smooth, guttulate, thick-walled, acicular to subcylindrical with taper in upper region to subobtuse apex, base truncate, irregularly curved, septate (adapted from Crous et al. 2019).

Type species: Hippopotamyces phragmitis Crous

Notes: Hippopotamyces is characterised by pycnidial, globose, brown conidiomata, ampulliform to doliiform, phialidic conidiophores and hyaline, smooth, guttulate, thick-walled conidia. Hippopotamyces morphologically resembles Septoria but is phylogenetically distinct. Hippopotamyces is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Mycosphaerellaceae. Molecular markers available for Hippopotamyces include ITS, LSU and RPB2.
