Hawksworthiana

Hawksworthiana U. Braun, Int. J. Mycol. Lichenol. 3(2-3): 276 (1988).

Index Fungorum number: IF 11094; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08613, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Lichenicolous, forming gall-like deformations. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium consisting of hyaline, septate, sparsely branched, thin-walled hyphae. Conidiophores reduced to the conidiogenous cells, erumpent, usually ampulliform but sometimes subcylindrical, aseptate, hyaline, thin-walled, mono or polyblastic, sympodial, conidiogenous loci conspicuous, thickened and darkened. Conidia formed singly, acrogenous, oblong-clavate to subcylindrical, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth, aseptate or uniseptate, hilum conspicuous, thickened and darkened (adapted from Videira et al. 2016, 2017).

Type species: Hawksworthiana peltigericola (D. Hawksw.) U. Braun

Notes: Hawksworthiana is characterised by hyaline, septate, sparsely branched mycelium, erumpent, usually ampulliform conidiogenous cells, with conspicuous conidiogenous loci and acrogenous, oblong-clavate to subcylindrical, hyaline aseptate or uniseptate conidia. Hawksworthiana differs from Ramularia in having a lichenicolous lifestyle. Hawksworthiana is a doubtful genus in Mycosphaerellaceae. Fresh specimens with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the taxonomic placement of the genus.
