Gloeocercospora

Gloeocercospora D.C. Bain & Edgerton ex Deighton, Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 57(2): 358 (1971).

Index Fungorum number: IF 8349; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08610, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Mycelium internal, composed of septate, branched hyphae. Stroma small or absent. Conidiomata sporodochial, suprastomatal, originating from hyphae which emerge through stomata, pulvinate, composed of more or less hyaline, repeatedly branched hyphae with short cells of which the terminal cells act as conidiogenous cells. Conidiogenous loci terminal, minute, unthickened. Conidia hyaline, filiform, straight to curved, multi-septate, smooth, in mucoid mass (adapted from Deighton 1971 and Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Gloeocercospora sorghi D.C. Bain & Edgerton ex Deighton

Notes: Gloeocercospora is characterised by sporodochial, suprastomatal conidiomata, and hyaline, filiform, straight to curved conidia. Braun (1995) considered Gloeocercospora as a synonym of Microdochium based on morphology. Only ITS sequence of G. sorghi (NBRC 7268, NBRC 6686, NBRC 7431, NBRC 7430 and NBRC 7266) are available in GenBank. The placement of Gloeocercospora in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. More taxa with DNA sequence data are needed to confirm the phylogenetic placement of Gloeocercospora.
