Associated with leaf spot. Mycelium internal, hyaline, septate, branched, forming well-developed stromata composed of swollen hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores emerging in dense fascicles from stromata, through the cuticle or through stomata, subcylindrical, straight to flexuous, geniculate-sinuous, aseptate, usually reduced to conidiogenous cells, rarelyuniseptate near the base, hyaline to pale yellow at the base, thin-walled, smooth, with inconspicuous conidiogenous loci, unthickened, neither darkened nor refractive. Conidia solitary, acicular, subcylindrical, filiform, narrowly obclavate, hyaline, discretely septate, thin-walled, smooth, apex subacute, base truncate, hila unthickened, not darkened (adapted from Braun 1993; Videira et al. 2016).

Notes: Filiella was introduced by Videira et al. (2016) with F. pastinacae as type species. F. pastinacae was previously known as Pseudocercosporella pastinacae but it was not congeneric with Pseudocercosporella s. str. based on P. bakeriIn the phylogenetic analysis of Videira et al. (2016), Filiella is closely related to Neopseudocercosporella and Fusoidiella. Filiella can be differentiated from Neopseudocercosporella and Fusoidella in having acicular-filiform conidia while the type species of Neopseudocercosporella, N. capsellae has sub cylindrical conidia and that of Fusoidiella, F. depressa has pigmented, fusiform conidia. Filiella is a distinct and well-supported genus in Mycosphaerellaceae.
