Clypeosphaerella

Clypeosphaerella Guatim., R.W. Barreto & Crous, in Guatimosim et al., Persoonia 37: 121 (2016).

Index Fungorum number: IF 812820; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08488, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 3 species with molecular data.

Frondiicolous, plant pathogenic. Sexual morph: Ascomata pseudothecial, epiphyllous, solitary, subcuticular to erumpent, globose, walls of 2–3 layers of brown to dark brown textura angularis, ostiole central. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, aparaphysate, fasciculate, subsessile, obpyriform to ovoid, hyaline, smooth. Ascospores inordinate, overlapping, fusoid, straight, uniseptate, slightly constricted at the septum, biguttulate, hyaline, thin-walled, smooth. Ascospores germinating at both ends, remaining hyaline, germ tubes following the main axis of the spore. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Guatimosim et al. 2016).

Type species: Clypeosphaerella quasiparkii (Cheew., K.D. Hyde & Crous) Guatimosim, R.W. Barreto & Crous

Notes: Clypeosphaerella quasiparkii was previously known as Mycosphaerella quasiparkii but was not congeneric with the type species of Mycosphaerella, M. punctiformis. Clypeosphaerella is characterised by pseudothecial, epiphyllous, solitary ascomata, bitunicate, aparaphysate, fasciculate asci and inordinate, overlapping, fusoid, straight, uniseptate ascospores. Clypeosphaerella is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Mycosphaerellaceae. Molecular markers available for Clypeosphaerella include ITS, LSU, Actin, Btub, Calmodulin and RPB2.
