Cercoseptoria

Cercoseptoria Petr., Annls mycol. 23(1/2): 69 (1925).

Index Fungorum number: IF 7543; Facesoffungi number: FoF 09185, 15 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Spots circular, definite, small 1–4 mm diam., centers pale to ashen, borders red. Sporodochia amphigenous, top-shaped, arising deep within the leaf tissue and erumpent, dark, about 45 μm broad at the top and of slightly greater height from base to top. Conidia resemble those of Septoria measuring about 35 × 2 μm (adapted from Stevens and Dalbey 1919).

Type species: Cercoseptoria chamaesyces (F. Stevens & Dalbey) Petr.

Notes: Cercoseptoria is characterised by amphigenous sporodochia producing septoria-like conidia. Videira et al. (2017) treated Cercoseptoria as a synonym of Pseudocercospora, but this treatment has not been confirmed with DNA data. Molecular data of the genus is lacking. The placement of Cercoseptoria in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful.
