Catenulocercospora

Catenulocercospora C. Nakash., Videira & Crous, in Videira, Groenewald, Nakashima, Braun, Barreto, de Wit & Crous, Stud. Mycol. 87: 303 (2017).

Index Fungorum number: IF 822580; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08481, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), 1 species with molecular data.

Phytopathogenic, forming brown rectangular leaf spots. Caespituli amphigenous, mainly hypophyllous, hyaline. Mycelium internal, hyaline. Stromata small to developed, brown, globose. Conidiophores pale brown at the base and turning hyaline towards the apex, septate, straight to geniculate-sinuous. Conidiogenous cells integrated, mono- or polyblastic, with darkened, thickened and refractive rim-like conidiogenous loci. Conidia hyaline, solitary or catenate in branched chains, rounded at the apex when solitary, obclavate or cylindrical to filiform, septate, with rim-like hila that are thickened, darkened and refractive (Adapted from Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Catenulocercospora fusimaculans (G.F. Atk.) C. Nakash., Videira & Crous

Notes: Catenulocercospora was introduced by Nakashima et al. in Videira et al. (2017) with C. fusimaculans as type species. Catenulocercospora is characterized by hyaline mycelium, pale brown to hyaline conidiophores and obclavate or cylindrical to filiform conidia. In the phylogenetic analysis of Videira et al. (2017), Catenulocercospora formed a distinct lineage close to Ramulispora. Catenulocercospora morphologically differs from Ramulispora and is considered as a distinct genus in Mycosphaerellaceae.
