Berteromyces
Berteromyces Cif., Sydowia 8(1-6): 267 (1954)
Index Fungorum number: IF 7363; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08583, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.
Leaf spots subcircular to irregular, zonate spots, 1–5 mm diam. brown or dark brown in the centre, and with dark brown margin. Caespituli hypophyllous, scattered. Mycelium internal, inconspicuous. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Stromata oval or ellipsoidal, dark brown, stromatal cells angular in outline, smooth. Conidiophores densely fasciculate, arising from stromata (1–7 per fascicle), emerging through stromata, unbranched, not geniculate, mostly short, cylindrical, 3–5- septate, distance between septa 6–40 µm, uniformly pale to medium olivaceous-brown, wall 0.5–1 µm wide, smooth. Conidiogenous cells terminal, cylindrical, conidiogenous loci small, at the apex, conspicuous, ovoid to oval, slightly thickened, but distinctly darkened, wall 0.5–0.8 µm thick. Conidia solitary, obclavate or cylindrical, straight to curved, 2– 5-septate, pale olivaceous brown, wall 0.5–1 µm thick, smooth, tip subobtuse, base obconic to somewhat obconically truncate wall of the hila 0.5–1 µm, somewhat thickened and darkened (adapted from Ciferri 1954 and Phengsintham et al. 2013).
Type species: Berteromyces aeneus Cif.
Notes: Berteromyces is characterised by hypophyllous caespituli, oval or ellipsoidal stomata, fasciculate conidiophore, ovoid to oval conidiogenous cells and obclavate or cylindrical conidia. Berteromyces is considered as part of the Passalora complex, with its type species treated as Passalora aenea (Cif.) U. Braun & Crous. Crous and Braun (2003) designated a neotype but DNA sequence data is unavailable to resolve the correct phylogenetic position of the genus. The placement of Berteromyces in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful.
