Annellophora

Annellophora S. Hughes, Trans. Br. mycol. Soc. 34(4): 544 (1952) [1951].

Index Fungorum number: IF 7162; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08581, 11 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2021), molecular data unavailable.

Mycelium superficial, foliicolous, solitary or in association with Cyanophyceae, Asterineae or Meliolineae composed of hyaline to brown septate, branched hyphae. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiophores simple, straight or curved, more or less cylindrical, septate, brown below, paler above, elongating by numerous successive cylindrical proliferations through the successive conidial scars, finally giving the upper part of conidiophore an annellate appearance. They arise directly from a repent hypha as lateral branch. Conidia obclavate to fusiform, 3–7-septate, pale brown to brown, paler at the apex with or without a single basal and lateral cellular appendage, arising singly and solitarily as blown-out ends of the apex of the conidiophore and its successive proliferations (adapted from Hughes 1951).

Type species: Annellophora solani (Syd.) S. Hughes

Notes: Annellophora is characterised by brownish hypophyllous colonies without causing any discoloration of the leaf. The placement of Annellophora in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful because molecular data is lacking. Annellophora species are only known by their hyphomycetous sporidesmium-like asexual morph (Seifert et al. 2011). Cultures and sequence data are essential to define its phylogenetic position.
