Importance and distribution

There are 14 Acrotheca epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but several species have been transferred to other genera such as Cylindrotrichum, Fonsecaea, Gomphinaria, Neta, Periconiella, Pleurophragmium, Pseudocercospora, Rhinocladiella and Zasmidium. Acrotheca comprises five species known on rotten wood of Abies alba (Pinaceae), leaves of Pyrus melanocarpa (Rosaceae), rotten wood of Populus alba (Salicaceae) and withered fruit of Fagus sylvatica (Fagaceae). Acrotheca is reported only from Europe (Italy) and North America (Canada). Fresh collections are needed as molecular data is lacking.
