Achorodothis

Achorodothis Syd., Annls mycol. 24(5/6):380 (1926).

Index Fungorum number: IF 40; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08577, 2 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), no molecular data available.

Associated with leaf spot. Sexual morph: Stromata mainly intraepidermal, pseudoparenchymatous, dark brown, forming continuous to loose crusts with loculi. Asci sparingly developed, clavate to almost ellipsoid, sessile or with short knob-like stalk, wall firm, apically thickened, 8-spored, immersed in a hyaline, viscous, little differentiated to slightly filamentous, paraphysoid mass. Ascospores 2- to 3-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid-ovoid, straight or rarely slightly asymmetric, aseptate, slightly attenuated towards the base, both ends rounded, at the base with a colourless bluntly conoid to capped appendage. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Sydow 1926; Videira et al. 2017).

Type species: Achorodothis poasensis Syd.

Notes: Achorodothis is characterised by intraepidermal, pseudoparenchymatous dark brown stromata, 2- to 3-seriate, hyaline, ellipsoid-ovoid ascospores (Videira et al. 2017). Achorodothis is not known from culture, and its phylogenetic placement is unresolved. The placement of Achorodothis in Mycosphaerellaceae is doubtful. Fresh collection and molecular data are needed to confirm the correct taxonomic placement of the genus.
