Cystocoleus
Cystocoleus Thwaites, Ann. Mag. nat. Hist., Ser. 2 3: 241 (1849).
Index Fungorum number: IF 7892; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06638, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Lichenicolous on rock. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Thallus
superficial, dense, fluffy, pale to fuscous, brown or black, filamentous. Filaments sub-erect, decumbent or spreading on the surface, sympodially branched, narrow, brittle and surrounded by contorted, nodulose, hyaline, thick- and smooth-walled, undulate to corrugated fungal hyphae, running the length of filaments of the photobiont, Trentepohlia. Spines lacking (adapted from Tian et al. 2014).
Type species: Cystocoleus ebeneus (Dillwyn) Thwaites
Notes: Cystocoleus is characterised by thalli consisting of small black, dense, brown to dark fluffy patches and brittle filaments surrounded by contorted, nodulose hyphae. Cystocoleus resembles Racodium in having orange pigmented Trentepohlia photobionts but C. ebeneus has shorter and less contorted hyphae (Muggia et al. 2008). The holotype of C. ebeneus is lost and a lectotype was designated by Hawksworth et al. (2011). The placement of Cystocoleus underwent many changes in recent years. It was placed in Capnodiales by Muggia et al. (2008). Crous et al. (2009) suggested that Cystocoleus should be in Teratosphaeriaceae while Hyde et al. (2013) referred Cystocoleus to Capnodiales incertae sedis. Cystocoleus is now accommodated in its own family Cystocoleaceae (Lücking et al. 2017). Molecular markers available for Cystocoleus are ITS, LSU, SSU and RPB2.
