Pseudopalawania

Pseudopalawania Mapook & K.D. Hyde, in Mapook, Macabeo, Thongbai, Hyde & Stadler, Biomolecules 10(no. 569): 10 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 834934; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06757, 3 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 2 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on dead rachis of Arecaceae. Sexual morph: Ascomata superficial, solitary or scattered, sub-carbonaceous to carbonaceous, appearing as circular, flattened, dark brown to black spots, covering the host, without a subiculum, with a poorly developed basal layer and an irregular margin. Ostioles central. Peridium comprising dark brown or black to reddish-brown cells of textura epidermoidea to textura angularis. Hamathecium cylindrical to filiform, septate, hyaline, branching pseudoparaphyses. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindric-clavate, straight or slightly curved, with an ocular chamber observed clearly when immature. Ascospores overlapping, 2–3-seriate, broadly fusiform to inequilateral, pointed ends, hyaline, uniseptate, constricted at the septum, guttulate when immature, surrounded by hyaline and thin layers of gelatinous sheath, observed clearly when mounted in Indian ink. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Mapook et al. 2020).

Type species: Pseudopalawania siamensis Mapook & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Pseudopalawania resembles Palawania in having superficial and flattened ascomata, with hyaline, uniseptate ascospores but can be differentiated based on the peridium comprising textura epidermoidea to textura angularis, cylindric-clavate asci with an ocular chamber and broadly fusiform to inequilateral ascospores surrounded by a thin gelatinous sheath while Palawania has inequilateral to ovoid asci and oblong to broadly fusiform ascospores. Pseudopalawania also resembles Muyocopron in having superficial, flattened ascomata, asci with an ocular chamber but can be differentiated based on the sub-carbonaceous to carbonaceous ascomata and hyalineuniseptate ascospores surrounded by a sheath while Muyocopron is characterised by coriaceous ascomata, aseptate ellipsoidal, hyaline ascospores lacking a sheath (Mapook et al. 2016). Molecular markers available for Pseudopalawania are ITS, LSU, SSU, RPB2 and TEF. Pseudopalawania is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Muyocopronaceae.
