Phellinocrescentia

Phellinocrescentia Crous & Decock, in Crous et al., Persoonia 33: 235 (2014).

Index Fungorum number: IF 810600; Facesoffungi number: FoF 08082, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, globose, solitary or aggregated, uni- to multilocular, with central ostiole; wall consisting of 3–6 layers of brown textura angularis; outer surface covered in brown, warty hyphae. Conidiophores reduced to conidiogenous cells or a supporting cell. Conidiogenous cells lining the inner cavity, hyaline, smooth, tightly aggregated, subcylindrical, straight to curved, phialidic with periclinal thickening. Conidia aseptate, solitary, hyaline, smooth, guttulate, thin-walled, ellipsoid to teardrop-shaped (adapted from Crous et al. 2014).

Type species: Phellinocrescentia guianensis Crous & Decock

Notes: Phellinocrescentia is characterised by pycnidial, globose, solitary or aggregated conidiomata, hyaline, smooth conidiogenous cells lining the inner cavity and aseptate, solitary, hyaline, smooth conidia. Phellinocrescentia resembles Phoma in morphology, but can be differentiated based on the solitary or aggregated, uni- to multilocular conidiomata, and ellipsoid to tear-drop-shaped conidia (Crous et al. 2014). Phellinocrescentia also differs from Phoma in having a unique ecological lifestyle, growing on basidiocarps of a Phellinus sp. Phellinocrescentia is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct genus in Eriomycetaceae. Molecular markers available for Phellinocrescentia are ITS and LSU.
