Italiofungus

Italiofungus Crous, in Crous et al., Fungal Systematics and Evolution 6: 194 (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 835078; Facesoffungi number: FoF 11955, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on host. Sexual morph: Unknown. Asexual morph: Conidiomata pycnidial, solitary, globose, brown with central ostiole; wall of several layers of brown textura intricata. Conidiophores arising from inner layer, hyaline, smooth, septate, branched, subcylindrical, straight to geniculate-sinuous. Conidiogenous cells integrated, terminal and intercalary, hyaline, smooth, subcylindrical with apical taper, proliferating sympodially at apex, scars not thickened nor darkened. Conidia solitary, hyaline, smooth, aseptate, subcylindrical, straight, apex obtuse, base truncate (adapted from Crous et al. 2020).

Type species: Italiofungus phillyreae (Thüm.) Crous

Notes: Italiofungus is characterised by pycnidial, solitary, globose conidiomata, hyaline, smooth, septate, branched, subcylindrical conidiophores, terminal and intercalary, hyaline conidiogenous cells and hyaline, smooth, aseptate, subcylindrical conidia. Italiofungus phillyreae was previously known as Depazea phillyreae, a microconidial coelomycete described from leaves of Phillyrea in Italy but was not congeneric with the type species of Depazea, D. frondicola. Italiofungus is morphologically and phylogenetically a distinct and well-defined genus in Monoblastiaceae. Molecular markers available for Italiofungus include ITS and LSU.
