Lichenized on leaves, in tropical regions. Sexual morph: Thallus ecorticate, greenish, subcuticular (subgenus Caprettia) or supracuticular (subgenus Porinula). Photobiont trentepohloid. Ascomata scattered (absent in subgenus Caprettia), sessile, subglobose, yellowish to red-brown or brown-black, carbonaceous or not, glabrous or with short to conspicuous, horizontal setae, ostiolate, ostiole apical. Involucrellum reduced, carbonized or not. Excipulum dense, consisting of compressed hyphae, appearing prosoplectenchymatous in thin sections, hyaline to brown. Hamathecium comprising 0.5–0.7 µm wide paraphyses, hyaline, straight, branched and anastomosing. Asci (2–)4–8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, short pedicellate, with broad, non-amyloid ocular chamber and fluorescent cap-structures. Ascospores uniseriate, ellipsoid-oval to sometimes curved, hyaline, uniseptate, smooth. Asexual morph: Pycnidia frequent, typically hair-like (subgenus Caprettia) or long-beaked with often slightly inflated base (subgenus Porinula). Conidia acrogenous, microconidia, aseptate, ellipsoid, small, hyaline, within pycnidial tube aggregated into gelatinous, rectangular sacci extruded from pycnidial beak as single diaspores. Notes: Caprettia is characterised by ecorticate, greenish thallus, dense excipulum, fissitunicate, cylindrical asci and ellipsoid-oval to sometimes curved, hyaline, uniseptate ascospores. Caprettia comprises morphologically different species. Caprettia amazonensis occurs below the epidermal layer and form black, hair-like, straight pycnidia. Members of the subgenus Porinula Lücking & Sérus. grow supracuticularly and comprise two groups. The type species, C. tanzanica, C. ornata, C. setifera, C. goderei, C. neotropica and C. nyssogenoides are all characterised by long-beaked pycnidia and have pale glabrous to black conspicuous setose ascomata. Caprettia confusa differs from other members of Caprettia in lacking pycnidia and having large ascospores similar to members of Trypetheliopsis (Hongsanan et al. 2020b). The status of Caprettia is doubtful and its relationship to similar genera such as Anisomeridium sensu lato and Trypetheliopsis needs to be confirmed (Harris 1995). Sérusiaux and Lücking (2003) familiarized Caprettia subgenus Porinula as a combination based on Porinula [non Porinula (Nyl.) Flagey], without considering that an illegitimate later homonym cannot be used as a legitimate combination. The replacement name Porinella has priority over Caprettia at the genus level.
