Paramicrothyrium

Paramicrothyrium H.X. Wu & K.D. Hyde, in Wu et al., Fungal Diversity 51(1): 204 (2011).

Index Fungorum number: IF 563363; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06754, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on the upper surface of leaves, superficial mycelium absent. Sexual morph: Thyriothecia circular, gregarious, membranaceous, dark brown, basal layer poorly developed, with an irregular central ostiole; in section lenticular. Upper wall comprising radiating parallel angular cells, cells at margin branching. Peridium comprising two strata, outer cells of textura epidermoidea, inner cells of textura angularis. Hamathecium comprising numerous asci inclined toward the central ostiole, pseudo paraphyses not observed or lacking. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical to cylindro-clavate, pedicellate. Ascospores uniseriate, fusiform-clavate, apex hyaline, 1-septate, possibly ciliate, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Wu et al. 2011).

Type species: Paramicrothyrium chinense H.X. Wu & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Paramicrothyrium is characterised by circular, gregarious, membranaceous thyriothecia, cylindrical to cylindro-clavate, pedicellate asci and uniseriate, fusiform-clavate ascospores. Paramicrothyrium resembles Microthyrium but can be differentiated in having cylindro-clavate asci, irregular ostiole and absence of conspicuous darkened ring as seen in Microthyrium. Paramicrothyrium is phylogenetically distinct from Microthyrium and belongs to Microthyriaceae. Molecular markers available for Paramicrothyrium are ITS, LSU and SSU.
