Importance and distribution

There are 141 Microthyrium epithets in Index Fungorum (2022), but several species have been transferred to other genera such as Aphanopeltis, Asterella, Asterinella, Calothyriopsis, Calothyrium, Cyclotheca, Dictyothyrium, Lembosina, Leptopeltis, Leptothyrium, Lichenopeltella, Micropeltis, Microthyriolum, Muyocopron, Palawania, Phaeothyriolum, Prillieuxina, Rhagadolobium, Ronnigeria, Saccardinula, Schizothyrium, Seynesia, Stomiopeltis, Tothia and Vizella. Microthyrium comprises 91 species known on a wide range of plants such as Calophyllum calaba (Calophyllaceae), Capparis sepiaria (Capparaceae), Carlina salicifolia (Asteraceae), Cryptocarya peumus (Lauraceae), Elaeagnus macrophylla (Elaeagnaceae), Eucalyptus ovata (Myrtaceae), Hedera helix (Araliaceae), Ilex aquifolium (Aquifoliaceae), Lardizabala biternata (Lardizabalaceae), Myrtus communis (Myrtaceae), Phillyrea angustifolia (Oleaceae), Pinus pinea (Pinaceae), Pistacia lentiscus (Anacardiaceae) and Quercus sp. (Fagaceae). Microthyrium is reported from Africa (Canary Islands), Asia (China, India), Australia, Europe (England, Italy, Scotland, Spain, Yugoslavia), South America (Chile) and the United States (Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands).
