Chaetothyriothecium
Chaetothyriothecium Hongsanan & K.D. Hyde, Phytotaxa 161(2): 161 (2014).
Index Fungorum number: IF 804964; Facesoffungi number: FoF 06751, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum 2022), 1 species with molecular data.
Saprobic on dead leaves. Sexual morph: Ascomata as small black spots on the surface of host leaves. Thyriothecia superficial, easily removed from host, globose, dark brown to black, ostiole central, ostioles surrounded by long setae. Setae brown to dark brown, with dark septa, narrow at apex and broader at the base. Upper wall comprising angular to cuboid cells, arranged as radial or parallel rows from the centre, with cone-like cells surrounding the ostiole, towards the outer edge, becoming pale brown, with meandering hyphae. Asci 4−8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, obovoid to ovoid or oblong, short pedicellate, ocular chamber not observed, forming at margin of thyriothecium and lying horizontal towards the centre ostiole with hamathecium. Ascospores oblong to ellipsoid, 1- septate, constricted at the septum, upper cell broader than lower cell, smooth-walled. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Hongsanan et al. 2014).
Type species: Chaetothyriothecium elegans Hongsanan & K.D. Hyde
Notes: Chaetothyriothecium is characterised by having a thyriothecia with ostioles surrounded by long setae, thin layer of cells radiating from central ostiole, poorly developed base, bitunicate asci and 2-celled hyaline ascospores. Chaetothyriothecium differs from similar genera in Microthyriaceae in having long, dark brown setae at the centre surrounding the ostiole. Only LSU sequence is available for Chaetothyriothecium. More gene sequences will help to confirm the natural classification of Chaetothyriothecium.
