Neojahnula

Neojahnula W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde, in Dong et al., Fungal Diversity: 10.1007/s13225-020-00463-5, [33] (2020).

Index Fungorum number: IF 557823; Facesoffungi number: FoF 07688, 1 morphological species (Species Fungorum. 2022), 1 species with molecular data.

Saprobic on submerged wood. Sexual morph: Ascomata scattered or clustered in small groups, superficial, subglobose or obpyriform, brown to black, membranous, with scarcely projecting papilla, ostiolate, with few setae. Peridium thin, one-layered. Pseudoparaphyses numerous, cellular, hypha-like, hyaline, sparsely septate. Asci 8-spored, bitunicate, fissitunicate, cylindrical, sessile or short pedicellate, with an ocular chamber and faint apical ring. Ascospores uni- to bi-seriate, elongate, ellipsoidal, tapering towards the apices, brown, uniseptate, upper cell slightly wider than lower cell. Asexual morph: Unknown (adapted from Dong et al. 2020).

Type species: Neojahnula australiensis (K.D. Hyde) W. Dong, H. Zhang & K.D. Hyde

Notes: Neojahnula is characterised by scattered subglobose or obpyriform, brown to black ascomata, fissitunicate, cylindrical, sessile or short pedicellate asci and elongate, ellipsoidal brown, uniseptate ascospores. Neojahnula australiensis was previously known as Jahnula australiensis, collected from submerged wood in freshwater in Australia but not congeneric with the type species of Jahnula, J. aquatica (Hyde 1993). Jahnula australiensis was previously placed in Jahnula based on the peridium comprising large pseudoparenchymatous cells (Hyde 1993). In the phylogenetic studies of Prihatini et al. (2008), Hyde et al. (2017), Huang et al. (2018) and Dong et al. (2020), J. australiensis clustered in a distinct lineage far from Jahnula with strong statistical support, hence was accommodated in the new genus Neojahnula. Neojahnula differs from Jahnula in having few setae adjoining the ascomata, a thin peridium consisting of single row of cells, asci with an ocular chamber and faint apical ring and uni- to bi-seriate ascospores (Dong et al. 2020). Neojahnula is a distinct genus based on morphology and phylogenetic analyses. Molecular markers available for Neojahnula are ITS, LSU and SSU.
